Determination of viral titer so that known amounts of virus can be used to infect cells during subsequent experimental work. Stocks of viral adenovirus particles can be described as:
- Plaque-forming units per mL (PFU/mL)
- Tissue culture infectious dose 50 per mL (TCID50/mL)
- Viral particles per mL (VP/mL)
The plaque assay and TCID50 assay are biological assays and indicate the number of infectious units (IU).
The VP method monitors the absorbance of disrupted virions at 260 nm, compared against a traceable standard. RT-PCR is a preferred method for determination of viral particles.
